Alicia Silverstone, "The Kind Diet" Book Signing,...
I spent a very vegan half-day with an old macrobiotic friend of mine. Traffic and vegan food aside, I was glad I did. One reason is that she let me in on an interesting rumor.
You know the new Alicia Silverstone vegan book, The Kind Diet?
Ignore that name at the top of the book cover. Alicia Silverstone didn’t really write The Kind Diet. Well, not the majority of it. The real writer was...

Veggie Conquest, NYC
In September, I attended “Veggie Conquest,” a monthly Iron Chef-style vegan cooking competition in New York City.
Unfortunately, compared to any Veggie Fair, Fest or Expo that I’ve been to, it was mostly a bust as far as sickly vegans. Sure, there were a few. I mean, there just had to be. But even to my highly biased eye, I couldn’t honestly say that overall, this group...

Vegan Quote of the Day
KaliMama: IMy doctor suspects an autoimmune disease, and the number one suspect is lupus (SLE.) I’ve been mentally preparing myself for this, or so I thought. I cried at the doctor’s office, and on the way home. The MRI is to see if the arthritis in my spine is squishing my nerves. That may mean back surgery. I’m already taking pills that aren’t vegan, because I’m...

Vegan Quote of the Day
VegeTexan: I’ve never minded sharing my living space with other creatures, except for mosquitoes. And no matter how much garlic I eat, it doesn’t seem to prevent those vampiric insects from sucking my blood. Mosquitoes annoy me. I try to repell them to the best of my vegan ability, but I don’t poison them, and I have to admit, I don’t even swat them.
I often excuse them...

Vegan Quote of the Day
vegankitty: A few weeks ago, one of my co-workers at the co-op told me that a vegan diet makes you more prone to yeast infections. She is very anti-vegan and pro-happy meat and loves to point out reasons to not be vegan, so I didn’t take her seriously. Now I have my first yeast infection in 18 years. Has anyone else heard this about vegans being susceptible to yeast infections? Or is it just...

How Our Vegan Diet Made Us ill →
A raw vegan family in the UK went back to animal products and thrived after the children developed rotting teeth and bloated starvation bellies to go along with their growth problems. Perhaps certain other raw vegan families with similar issues could learn something from this.

Interview With An Ex-Vegan: Christine Lehman
Christine Lehman became a “Let Them Eat Meat” reader the day after she left veganism. She seems to have found the site through the entry “Have Fear of Animal Products, Will Travel,” which would be appropriate, since unhappy traveling as a vegan played a major part in her leaving it after about four months.
Her blog, called “The Curvy Catholic,” is described as...

Vegan Leader: T. Colin Campbell
T. Colin Campbell is the author of The China Study, the book that vegans most often cite to prove the superiority of the vegan diet for health. So why is Campbell, who has been “99% vegan since about 1990,” not looking so hot?
Campbell recently appeared on Larry King Live for an episode about E. Coli-tainted hamburgers. Campbell’s role was to be the vegetable guy, to agitate...

Vegan Quote of the Day
imblissful: Yesterday my two-year-old daughter wanted something yummy. So I sat her on the counter next to me and made vegan brownies, and while I was mixing, she was scooping handfuls of batter out of the bowl and eating it up. Try doing that with non-vegan brownies and you could get salmonella or something else icky. I bet she ate half the batter, it was so sweet.

Meatless Mondays to Backfire in Baltimore
Baltimore public schools have instituted “Meatless Mondays,” apparently to cut costs and “give children more options.” This would seem to be a victory of sorts for the veggie movement, but based on the stomach-churning food shots in this CNN report, the long-term effect of this policy will likely be to transform these poor kids into carnivores for life.
On the Monday...

misssakura: One time I went to this vegan party, and this person brought in jelly with pineapple. Nice right? WRONG. It was just agar agar…with bits of fruit in it. Unfortunately I got given a huge slice of it, and it was so awful that I put the plate on the floor and luckily one of the children stepped in it.

Vegan Quote of the Day
DiaShel: I have a love/hate relationship with non-vegan smells. They smell good and gross to me at the same time. If I like the smell, then I feel guilty for liking it, even though I’m not considering eating it at all. Part of liking the smell might be nostalgia. It’s also that it wasn’t that I ever disliked the taste of meat and dairy. If given the choice, though, I’d...

Vegan Quote of the Day
Vegan Cheese Website: Our founder was raised on his grandparents’ dairy farm where the milk produced was used to make some of the best (in our opinion) cheddar cheeses in the world. By the time he was born, dairy farming had been in his family for many generations. Rarely was a meal found on his table that did not include a wide variety of dairy products. It seemed, therefore, quite...

How Veganism is Like Abstinence-Only Sex Education
Veganism is a philosophy that emphasizes abstinence from animal products to the exclusion of all other alternatives to factory farming, particularly regarding free range, organic, locally raised animal products. This lifestyle promotes animal product abstinence until death and either completely avoids any discussion about raising animals humanely for meat and dairy, or ridicules the inadequacies...

laur b: So Morningstar Farms, the company that was claiming last year to be cutting down on using eggs, has now added them to a formerly vegan product which I know many of us really enjoy — the burger crumbles.

But Is It Vegan?: Oyster Mushrooms
“But is it vegan?” Deployed at events and restaurants that are not fully controlled by trusted vegans, the answer to this question is essential when vegans find a food they think they might want, but are not yet sure of all its moral, health and environmental ramifications.
A pig corpse on a spit is self-explanatory, but a plate of cupcakes with carrot designs on top might give a...

Raw Vegan Child Has Bloated Starvation Belly: What...
Joanne: My son is eight and has a BIG BELLY! I have noticed this for a while, but now other people are starting to notice. He’s very skinny and ‘off the charts’ (far below) when it comes to height and weight, but I try not to compare when it comes to those things - who made them up anyway!? He weighs about 47 pounds. Honestly, he looks almost like one of those African children...

Pop!: I’m hypothyroid, have some pretty bad joint pain in my knees, beginnings of joint pain in my hands, have asthma that’s flaring up worse than it’s been in the past…receding gums, not much energy. My general health complaint is that I do what I’m “supposed” to do but don’t feel that great, and it kind of drives me nuts. A friend recommended a...

Vegan Quote of the Day
James: This year I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (hashimotos thyroiditis), carpal tunnel in both arms, arthritis in my feet, migraine disease, chronic daily headaches, anemia, and now I have a painful lump in the side of my foot I had to be x-rayed for today. I also gained 70 pounds in the past year without changing my diet (it actually got healthier), and now I also have sinitus, tmj,...

Vegan Quote of the Day
humblepie: Up until about six weeks ago, I was a half-hearted omnivore. It suddenly dawned on me that eating animal products at all was stupid and not fun. I decided to try vegetarianism for 30 days, and upon understanding that vegetarians still eat eggs and dairy, I decided that didn’t go far enough and cut out all animal products from my diet. I read Becoming Vegan and was determined not to...

Interview With an Ex-Vegan: Tristan Jones
Tristan Jones is friends with Colin Fuller, the ex-vegan I interviewed last week. I haven’t really met Tristan (though we were in the same vicinity once), so pretty much all I know about him is what he says in this interview. The only introduction I will give, then, is that Tristan has made “Let Them Eat Meat” history by being the first ex-vegan I have interviewed who...

Vegan.com: "Vegan News Doesn't Get Any Huger Than... →
One vegan cheese revolution doth tread upon another’s heel, so fast they follow. But while Daiya made vegan news with its texture, which some say seems like real cheese, it’s still expensive and weird and not likely to win any converts.
As Vegan.com reports (that giant subject up there is the link), this new fake cheese by Agribusiness giant Cargill, called “Lygomme™ACH Optimum...

Another Best Ever Decision
I go to vegan forums occasionally to find quotes, get ideas, and to satisfy my morbid curiosity. The first thread I clicked on today was called “Vegan. Two Years. Awww yeah.” In it, the two-year-strong vegan who created the thread announces to everyone: “I had Buddhist Chinese buffet and chocolate cake with mango gelato in celebration! Best decision of my life.”

Vegan Moms on Pregnancy Cravings
Azhia: I’ve talked to currently pregnant and previously pregnant mothers who say that they “crave” meat (and a few of these interviewees were supposedly vegan). Interview With an Ex-Vegan: Colin Fuller
The first time I met Colin (and I’m pretty sure the last time I saw him), it was at a party of a mutual friend of ours, Tristan, also vegan at the time. What stood out to me immediately was the sweatshirt Colin was wearing - a dark hoodie with the letters V-E-G-A-N splayed out across his chest - and simply from that, I felt an affinity with him, or at least like I already knew a lot about...

Zanahorias!: I have a friend that went vegetarian, then vegan, “got sick,” went back to vegetarian, then to… working at McDonalds! She obviously wasn’t very committed!

"Best Decision I Ever Made"
I’ve often heard vegans say that going vegan was the best decision they ever made. Something about this comment strikes me as odd. Even though, I guess it makes sense. If you believe that veganism is good for animals, the planet and your own health, that it does no harm and all good, it does seem like a pretty airtight decision.
Still, I used to believe all that, and I don’t think I...
