Unfortunately, it’s not me interviewing her, it’s Health.com. And despite being a site all about health, the interviewer seems to care more about Zooey’s movie career and marriage than about whether she got vegan brain fog or not. In fact, the only question she asks about Deschanel’s veganism is: “You used to be vegan right?”
Not a bad question, though. I’m going to have to steal that one for future ex-vegan interviews. Here is Zooey’s response:
Not anymore. My older sister [Bones star Emily Deschanel] has been a very, very committed vegan since high school. I wish I could be like that, but I’m not. I have a lot of food sensitivities—I can’t eat wheat or soy—and it was very difficult to eat and get enough calories. It was even impossible to eat at a vegan restaurant. [Laughs.]
Jeez, and I thought I was a bitter ex-vegan. I’m sorry Zooey, but there are plenty of gluten- and soy-free vegans on the internet who could have given you advice and support if you cared as much as your sister does. Which you obviously don’t.
